Battery-electric vehicle sales surged in September across 12 major European markets, capturing a record share as higher fuel prices and affordable new models accelerated the shift away from gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Registration figures for all European countries will not be published until late October, but data already released in 12 countries that account for more than 83 percent of the region’s market point to a broad acceleration in demand.

BEV sales in the 12 markets increased 62 percent in September to reach a market share of 33 percent, up from 22 percent in the same month of 2025, according to an Automotive News Europe analysis of the data. In the first nine months, BEV sales rose 42 percent to 2.3 million units, with market share increasing to 26 percent from 20 percent in the same period of 2025.
